Digital Photo Frames – A Brief Introduction

Picture Frames

One of the most common items that are used as house display items are picture frames. Unlike ordinary decorating items, picture frames always stay unique when the frame design is combined with the picture being used. For the picture frame to be complete, a photo must be developed or printed on a certain size for it to fit and display well.

This serves as the greatest limitation of these tradition photo frames, especially when film photography went out of the mainstream. Now digital photo frames are making their way to average consumers as more users switch to digital photography.

What are Digital Picture Frames?

The modern frames have a design similar to the traditional picture frames, but instead of using a transparent plastic to house a single photo, an LCD panel is used instead. For cost efficiency, most of the digital photo frames are for tabletops and are usually sized less than 10 inches. More expensive photo frames that cost above $200 can support up to 15″ photos.

Most digital picture frames have a card slot or USB port that serves as a means of feeding photos into the frame. Although some photo frames have internal memory, digital photo frames display digital images by reading the contents of memory card or USB device.

What are the common features of Digital Frames?

All digital picture frames can read JPEG image formats. Once the card or USB device is plugged in, the first or random image is displayed immediately once everything is set. A photo may remain static on the display as long as there is power. What makes digital picture frames so versatile is the ease of changing the photo with the press of a button. Most digital picture frames these days allow timed slideshows so that all the digital images have their spotlight on the frame.

Are there any advanced features that better models have?

Some of the advanced models come with additional features like Wi-Fi capability that can allow photos to be displayed from popular photo sharing sites. Wi-Fi also allows other Wi-Fi enabled devices to share photos wirelessly without the need of a memory card or a USB flash disk. Others go beyond pictures by supporting additional formats like video files, audio files, RSS feeds, text files, and other multimedia content. Some of the stylish models may have advanced slideshow options and transition effects to impress any digital enthusiast. Digital photo frames may even come with a cable that can be plugged into a TV to allow photos to be displayed on the big screen instead.

Since these photo frames fall in the category of portable digital devices, digital photo frames are a bit more expensive than the ordinary frames. However, their versatility and adaptation to digital photography makes these trendy frames worth the investment. Having a single digital picture frame can grant you unlimited photo display possibilities without the need of printing a photo ever again. Digital picture frames are just one of the examples on how display technology is evolving.
